religion and Nature

Department of Religion HOME

Graduate HOME

The M.A. Program
The master's degree provides a broad background in the study of religious traditions, theoretical orientations in the discipline, and an initial concentration in one of the three fields of specialization.

The Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. program, which will accept its first students for Fall 2003, trains future scholars to conduct original research and teach in colleges, universities and other educational institutions

Listed as one of the three fields of study, Religion and Nature seeks to understand the complex, reciprocal relationships among human cultures, religions, and the earth's living systems is vital to addressing contemporary environmental problems. For over three decades, scholars from many disciplines have addressed religion's role in shaping human relations to nature. Until now, however, no graduate program has responded to this groundswell of scholarly awareness by offering a doctoral degree focused on religion and the natural environment. Religion and Nature is the first US doctoral program to address the religious dimensions of human relationships with the natural environment, and is designed to respond to the urgent need to look at human attitudes and values regarding non-human nature.

Science and health communication

College of Journalism and Communications HOME

Graduate HOME

Master's Track in Science/Health Communication
The track is aimed at teaching scientists and health specialists to communicate effectively via mass media and teaching mass media specialists to translate the language of science and health into meaningful and understandable stories for their audiences. These goals are achieved through theoretical, writing and applied courses.

At least two features of the program make it unique among science communication programs nationwide. First, other existing science communication programs in the U.S. focus only on training journalists. UF's program is open not only to journalists who want to specialize in covering science and health, but also offers training for people planning to work as public affairs or public information officers for science and health organizations, such as NASA, for other communication specialists and for scientists who need to be able to communicate with the public about their work. Another unique feature of UF's program is that it focuses on training students to understand and communicate effectively about science and health policy.

Soil and Water Science

Department of Soil and Water Sciences HOME - 392-1803

Undergraduate HOME

Three undergraduate tracks to train students in managing our soil and water resources in a wide range of ecosystems including agricultural, forested, range, urban and wetlands, as related to soil and water quality and sustainable productivity.

  • Environmental Soil Science
  • Environmental Water Science
  • Environmental Management and Policy

Graduate HOME

Programs in one of the following concentrations, with their research project in one or more of the department's thrust areas:

  • Soil Science: Graduate students in this track can formulate their course work with focus in sustainable production of agronomic, turf, silviculture, and ornamental crops, with strong background in traditional soil science. This program is designed for students with a strong interest in agricultural sciences, as related to sustainable productivity and water quality.
  • Environmental Science: Graduate students in this track can formulate their course work with their focus on environmental science. This program is designed for students with strong interest in non-traditional soil science, as related surface and groundwater quality.
  • Hydrologic Science: Graduate students in this track can formulate their course work with focus in hydrologic sciences, with emphasis in hydrology, water quality, wetlands, and aquatic systems.
  • Ecology: Graduate students in this track can work with Soil and Water Science Faculty and obtain graduate degrees in the 'Interdisciplinary Ecology Program'.

Tropical Conservation and Development

Programs under this broad category include:

  • Tropical Conservation and Development (TCD) Program HOME

TCD offers an interdisciplinary graduate certificate and an interdisciplinary graduate concentration in TCD. The certificate and the concentration are essentially a "minor" within a Master's or Ph.D. degree programMission is to advance biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and the welfare of rural people in the tropics through interdisciplinary graduate education, research, and collaborative learning and practice.

  • Interdisciplinary: Working Forests in the Tropics HOME

Integrated Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program:

The program offers a tiered interdisciplinary curriculum to train doctoral students to conduct applied research on (1) tradeoffs and complementarities among working forest options, (2) the effectiveness of different kinds of working forests for conservation and development, and (3) capacity building efforts designed to promote forest management and conservation in neotropical regions.

  • The Program for Studies in Tropical Conservation HOME

  • The program is aimed at participants who already have substantial experience, and in many cases responsibility, in the broad area of conservation and resource management in their own countries. They must meet the University of Florida's entrance requirements and may pursue a Masters, a Ph.D. or a non-degree program in a variety of departments. The Program for Studies in Tropical Conservation (PSTC) is an interdisciplinary program that develops human resources and strengthens institutions in tropical countries through integrated research and training. The regional initiatives of the PSTC incorporate human dimensions and biological issues in conservation, and focus on a diversity of landscapes ranging from humid tropical forests to semi-arid steppe and marine environments. The PSTC faculty works with institutions in tropical countries to build programs that address local conservation needs and establish stronger linkages among local, national and international institutions. The PSTC provides training for managers, educators and researchers through in-country workshops and seminars, and graduate training at UF.
